Platten wheels

Post by Alamodem » Thu Sep 26, 2019 10:15 am

I was curious about Platten wheels. I see everyone using aluminum wheels (2"). Would it not be better to maybe use a 2" contact wheel and a 3" contact wheel so one can have more diversity? Then have your small wheel attachment and then maybe a 7 inch and a 10 or 12 inch contact wheel?

Hoping to build my grinder soon.

There is no right or wrong way in this regard. There are plenty of options available to you. Some designs include a rotating platen wheel which has a number of other wheel sizes on it. This provides the flexibility you're talking about.

If you come up with modification to the plan to allow this, feel free to share. It's always interesting to see different designs.

I'd like a platen/contact wheel option. I've seen the Caffrey Platen ( and like the idea of having a smaller radius rubber contact wheel. It would be simple enough to fabricate. The wheels are not as common as plain old alum ones though.
