Other materials

I have no experience with this type of belt grinder, so please bear with me if I ask some basic questions. Would aluminum be acceptable to build this instead of steel? Would it be too soft and flexible for heavy use?

Hi Floyd,

We have had a couple of inquiries regarding aluminum, but no posted builds.

From a construction point of view aluminum may pose an issue with the threaded holes, say to lock the tool arm into the frame. Being that the material is 3/8" the threaded holes may not have the thread strength required. You'd hate to crank the handle hard and strip the threads out. This could be remedied by adding threaded steel inserts such as Nutserts or PEM nuts.

From the mass side of things, more is better. Steel is about 2.5 times denser than aluminum and really soaks up vibrations very well.
