Jason's 80/20 Extruded 72"grinder

Post by Ranger Gillikin » Fri Jul 14, 2017 12:56 pm

This is my own design that I built from 80/20 Extruded aluminum that I got at the salvage yard. Its still a work in progress. I made all my attachment like the platen and wheels except for the drive wheel. I could find any round stock big enough. I like to try to build most thing from raw material and recyled materials that I can find at my local salvage yard. Its kinda a figure it out as you go kind of project. Recently I've added a vacuum system, a mist system, stainless tool rest and a stand that allow grinder to be used in the vertical and horizontal position. I still have a few more modifications to do to the stand to get it like I want. I was able to build this grinder by looking at other people's builds and sites like this one to get ideas. I hope somebody finds these pictures useful and is able to to improve on my design or just to inspire some bodies creative process. I really enjoy building things and this grinder has been a awesome challenge. I still have a lot more to do to mine and look forward to seeing other people's builds and getting more ideas. Enjoy.

Really nice build! I love 80/20.

Do you have any plans that you would be able to share?

If I had a set of plans I would definitely share them. Problem is that I don't. I spent about 6 months reading about how they work and looking at as many designs that I could find online. I run a crane offshore so I spend a lot of time with nothing to do but think. I pretty much worked the basic design out in my head then went to the shop to see what I had to work with and started building. I do have a set of plans that I found online (I believe it's the plans for the no weld grinder)but I only used them to determine a few basic dimensions. My main hobby is fabrication and I have the equipment to make just about anything so I'm not limited to building things a certain way. My design requires a milling machine, metal lathe, tig, and a few other specialty tools. My grinder has the basic diementions of the average grinder so someone could build something similar but they would have to figure out a few of the components on their own. If someone is interested in building one like this or just likes the way I did a certain part I will be more than happy to try explain how I did it. I can even send close up picture and measurements if Im not at sea. I have few pictures of the different stages of the build on my phone but probably not enough to do anybody much good. If somebody is really interested and would like some detailed pictures etc just message me and I'll try my best to help out.

I can upload the no weld grinder plans that I do have if you want those. They are the plans that you can find just by searching the net for 2x72 grinder plans. Personally I would rather have plans for your grinder. I really like how your turned out. If mine wasn't as shiny it would not look that nice.
